Reports: Real Madrid ready to sell star player to Manchester United.

Real Madrid's loss will be Manchester United's gain!

What’s the story?

Real Madrid are ready to sell RaphaĆ«l Varane to Manchester United in the summer, according to Calcio Mercato. The Italian publication report that the Spanish giants want £50 million for the defender and the Red Devils are ready to offer that amount.

Jose Mourinho intends to sign a top defender this summer and has set sights on landing the French defender. The United manager is not happy with Chriss Smalling and Phil Jones and wants someone else to partner Eric Bailly in the heart of the defence.

In case you didn’t know...

Varane was brought to Bernabeu by Mourinho in  2011. The 23-year-old centre-back was added straight away to the first team, where he partnered with Sergio Ramos.

This is not the first time Mourinho has tried to sign the defender from the La Liga side. The manager made three separate attempts to lure the defender away from Bernabeu during his time at Chelsea and also tried to bring him in when he took over at Old Trafford.

The young defender, however, refused to leave the Spanish capital as he saw himself playing regularly at the club. But now, Zidane has opted to stick with Pepe and then also sign a new centre-back in the summer to replace the Portuguese international.

The heart of the matter

Real Madrid are planning a squad overhaul in the summer and are ready to let go of their star players. Leonardo Bonucci is being targeted by the Spanish side and are willing to let go of Varane.

Reports claim that Zidane is very confident of convincing Bonucci to join Madrid despite him having a lengthy contract with Juventus. The Italian champions have rebuffed interest fromChelsea and Manchester City for their defender in recent times and have revealed that they have no intentions of selling him.

With Madrid ready to sell Varane, Mourinho is willing to pounce on the opportunity to sign him. The 23-year-old has a long time left in his career and would prove to be a vital part of the team the Manchester United manager wants to build at Old Trafford.

What’s next?

Manchester United will try and reduce the price but know that Madrid will also do the same when it comes to the transfer of De Gea. The club are highly likely to accept a swap deal as they eye each other's players in the summer.

Author’s Take

Varane can prove to be the signing that makes things solid at the back for Manchester United. However, if they are to spend £50 million on him, they would not be able to spend much to strengthen other areas.
